About the Opportunity | Ko te āheinga

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Nursery Worker to join our team in a fixed-term role until 30 June 2027. This position is based at HBRC’s Poplar and Willow Pole Nursery in Napier and offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic, hands-on environment while contributing to sustainable land-use practices.

If you have a background in horticulture, forestry, or nursery operations, and enjoy working outdoors, this role could be a perfect fit for you. The work involves propagation, planting, irrigation, pest control, and general nursery maintenance, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about environmental conservation.

This role requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to operate various types of machinery, including tractors, quad bikes, and chainsaws. Candidates who already hold (or are willing to obtain) a Grow Safe – Approved Handler Certificate will be highly regarded. Safety is a top priority, and we are looking for team members who prioritize workplace health and safety regulations while thriving in a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the propagation, planting, and maintenance of nursery stock, primarily poplars and willows.
  • Operate and maintain nursery equipment including tractors, quad bikes, and irrigation systems.
  • Carry out pest and disease management, ensuring healthy plant growth.
  • Maintain nursery infrastructure, including shade houses, irrigation systems, and work areas.
  • Participate in land management initiatives to support HBRC’s soil conservation efforts.
  • Work closely with a team of nursery specialists, contributing to knowledge-sharing and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols, including proper handling of chemicals and equipment.
  • Support ongoing environmental restoration and recovery projects, particularly in response to Cyclone Gabrielle.

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate a strong passion for horticulture and environmental conservation. We are looking for individuals who thrive in outdoor environments and are comfortable with physically demanding work in various weather conditions.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in nursery work, horticulture, forestry, or related fieldwork.
  • Proficiency in operating tractors, quad bikes, chainsaws, and irrigation systems.
  • A practical problem-solver with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong understanding of safe work practices, especially regarding machinery and chemicals.
  • Hold or be willing to obtain a Grow Safe – Approved Handler Certificate.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
